Most homeowners are under the belief that drought tolerant landscaping requires less maintenance.  Far from true.  Although these areas may no longer need weekly mowing or trimming, they do require regular weeding and thinning, and the removal of mature trees may not necessarily result in water savings.

Mulching around plants can reduce weeds and is great for retaining moisture, which means less watering. Drought tolerant plants will often require full or nearly full sun in order to survive.  The angle of the sun and hours of direct sunlight may affect your plantings.  Generally, drought tolerant plants should be placed in groups or 'zones' in that they may require the same water, soil and sun needs, and perhaps have their own irrigation valve.  Drip irrigation is best when considering irrigation methods.  Sprinkler systems may need to be replaced with a full landscape redesign.  

Mature trees usually do not require heavy irrigation and provide shade, and should be taken into consideration when planning a new landscape design.  Drought tolerant plantings will still require general maintenance; weeding, trimming, pruning, to ensure a neat appearance.
